A shifting concern is not going to necessarily be a result of misadjusted linkage, not going into first could be. From the rod connecting to the transmission, there should be some sort of pivot point it would be attached to. I would look for an adjustment near that pivot, possibly a collar with a set screw, or a slide with a nut. There is a throttle valve cable that can affect shift points, and it should have an adjustment at the throttle connection. This adjustment is made with a plastic collar, and spring loaded lock. There should be a plunger to depress at that lock. What you do, is depress the lock, and withdraw the cable sleeve away from the throttle linkage, and release. The adjustment is automatically performed when you apply the throttle linkage fully, you will hear it click(or ratchet). This is done with the vehicle off, and stationary. This would be about your only adjustment. If you still have concerns with dynamic upshifts, it could be internal to transmission.
