I have a 1986 4runner with 31,000 on a rebuilt engine with new head. It over heats when going up hill but only up hill. If I pull over it cools down to a normal running temp in about 5 min. Or when I start going back down the hill it cools quickly. The radiator is less than 2 yrs old the water pump and thermostat are new.

Symptoms indicates insufficient cooling.

Check the radiator for clogging.
Check the radiator fan, if it has clutch couplings, it could be weak.
Check radiator for external blockages to the fins, reducing air flow.
