My car had the brake and charge light come on the tachometer has become very eratic, the battery is new and the alt. was checked out and seems to be fine. Could it be in one of the cables, or voltage regulator?

Okay, my guess is the issue with the gauges is the result of a weak battery. I would recommend getting a second opinion on the alternator. If it still checks good, then I would check the fusible link between the alt and the battery. If it is bad, the alt can be good, but it won't charge the battery.
