I have a 1986 Honda Accord Lxi. My brake pads are still good but as I drive down the street there is a high pitched squealing noise. The more I drive and the more I apply firm pressure to the brakes it eventually goes away. What can I do to get rid of this noise. I know I should take it to a mechanic but I am unemployed so if I can fix it then that would help. Thanks.

Check the inboard and outboard pads, they have a wear indicator, and one is touching the rotor, and it's probably due to wear. Physical inspection by removing the wheels is required!

It's kind of weird. It doesn't make noise when I brake only when I am not braking. Then if I pump the brakes it will gradually go away. I will check what you mentioned. I hope I can fix it

This is how the wear sensor operates until the pads get very thin, then the noise is constant. The lining material should be no thinner than the backing plate of the pad, this is when it's time to replace them!
