gas is reflowing out of the gas tank

when i awoke this morning i smelt gas. went to my car and paint was gone from under the gas cap opened up and gas was coming back out of the gas cap. removed and gas is full in resivoir car still runs but im wondering whats going on and if ill make it to work tonight
