S10 idles high an low an I can rev it up. But when I put it in gear an give it gas it backfires thru the intake an cuts off an it will crank right back up.

If the idle is loping (up and down), chances are either you have a vacuum leak or the idle air control valve is bad. It's been awhile since I worked on an 86. Is it fuel injected (TBI) or still have a carb?

It's fuel injected. I replaced all the spark plugs an wires the distributor cap an button an it acted fine for a day then went back to doing the same thing.

Is the engine code W? That would be the 8th code from right to left.
