Do I need to take the starter off to change the positive batterty terminal? If not what tool do I need and size 5/8?

You need a basic set of tools, wrenches and sockets. I don't know the actual size. Grab a socket and place it on the nut, if a little too small, grab the next size up. Specialty wrenches and sockets, I buy as I need. Basic tools, I buy in a set.

Take the negative battery cable loose.
