Gear stick?

My boyfriends car is a 86 chevy blazer, and everytime he goes past 2nd gear you can hear a whirring sound coming from near the gear stick. There is also a funny smell, and if he goes up to 50mph the gear stick starts shaking. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Make sure the transmission fluid is full. With manual transmissions, most people don't service them. AS far as the shifter moving a bit, that can be considered normal. Check universal joints...
