thefob for my car has suddenly stopped working, but the light on it is working fine, i have also tried my spare fob and thats the same

This should be an after market system. Try reprograming the fob. For after market systems, there are different ways of doing it and unloess you have the manual, it is not possible to know how to reprogram it.
