258 6 cyl that was professionally rebuilt about 6,000 miles ago. The motor will fire for about a second when trying to start it then just turnover after that. Since this happened I replaced the distributor cap and rotor, plugs, ignition module and fuel filter. It's getting gas to the carburetor and spark to the plugs. Please help!

All-righty Then

As long as you will do your part, on your end, I can get you running. And maybe even help you with your Jeep beyond that!

The better your descriptions, the better I understand!

Do you have a voltmeter, can you use it for checking DC voltage, and are you capable of Continuity testing

Your Jeep was running fine prior to it failing to start?

Have you loosened, turned, or done anything to the distributor other than replacing the cap?

Have you been messing with the carb screws? (Be specific)

Know your way around the engine?

3 soda bottle cap-fuls of fuel into you carb. Does better. No change. Observations?

Being 25 years old, is the vacuum lines intact, or has things been modified under the hood?

Forgetting the extra crap I have, are you still using the "Correct" fuel filter as in the pic below---(has 3 N. Ipples)

Do you have tune-up meters tools, etc?

Someone there that can assist, that may know more than you?

Once again. It will fire at 1st, and acts as though it wants to start, then it's just plain ole turning over with no hope. Correct?

I will help you as much as I can, no matter how car dumb you might be.I was there, once too!

I don't have a voltmeter.
The jeep was running fine before this.
I didn't do anything to the distributor other than change the cap and rotor after I had problems.
No touch on the carb screws.
I think I know my way around the engine. That's why it's frustrating!
I did pour fuel down the carb. No change.
I don't think anything has been modified under the hood.
I'm using the correct fuel filter. I replaced it after the problem started and in the right position too
I don't have any tune up meters. And you got it right. It will fire at 1st, and acts as though it wants to start, then it's just plain ole turning over with no hope.

Spent way too much money, making it more handsome than mine! Should spend it under the hood!

Got BBD Carb with stepper motor sticking out of the back?

Pass emissions check points, with no problem?

DID YOU REPLACE THE COIL TOO. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW.

If it's "RUNNING" with key in start position, then dies when you release the key.

Try this (pics below) Send back results.

If it "RUNS", I'll know which way to go!

If it runs--you will need a Cheapo Voltmeter, $5-$20 at an auto parts store.I'll tell you how to use it. DIGITAL VOLTMETER WILL BE MORE USEFUL, THAN AN ANALOG VOLTMETER(ONE WITH A SWEEPING NEEDLE)

If it runs---the only way to stop it is disconnect the "Nelsomatic Ignition Switch Bypass", THAT YOU JUST INSTALLED!

WATCH THOSE PESKY MOVING ENGINE PARTS, ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES, HIPPY HAIR NEEDS TO BE CHOPPED OFF!

YOU WILL NEED A PIECE OF INSULATED WIRE, YOU CAN CHOP IT OUT OF A LAMP CORD, OR YOU CAN USE JUMPERS, AS IN MY PIC

YOU ARE GONNA CONNECT "POSITIVE BATTERY POST" TO "POSITIVE COIL". THEN ATTEMPT TO CRANK UP NORMALLY. IF IT RUNS, KILL IT BY REMOVING THE BATTERY END OF YOUR WIRE. THE FUSE IN MY SYSTEM, IS NOT NECESSARY, I JUST PLAY STUFF SAFER THAN MANY.

GET ON IT! I'VE BEEN A WAITIN' ON YOU A LONG TIME!

IT'S 01:30 EASTERN HERE. PAST MY BEDTIME!

I HOPE IT DOES RUN. WE WILL HAVE FUN FIXING IT!

ALTHOUGH, EVERYBODY NEEDS A VOLTMETER. HOLD OFF ON GETTING IT, UNTIL WE GET A LITTLE DEEPER.

IF NO CRANKY, I WANT YOU TO TAKE OFF YOUR DISTRIBUTOR CAP, SEE IF YOU CAN "SORTA" FORCE THE ROTOR BUTTON TO TURN THE DISTRIBUTOR SHAFT IT SITS ON. NOT ENOUGH FORCE TO BREAK THE ROTOR BUTTON. IT MAY HAVE A LITTLE SLOP, CW AND CCW (THIS IS NORMAL), BUT IT SHOULD NOT TURN, BY HAND!

WHILE YOU ARE IN THERE, SEE IF THE SHAFT HAS SIDEWAYS WOBBLE. IT SHOULD NOT!

UNLESS YOU KNOW THE CORRECT PROCEDURE, DO NOT MOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR OR TRY TO TAKE IT OUT.I CAN EXPLAIN HOW TO DO THIS THE EZ WAY, AND SAVE A LOT OF HEARTACHE. IF WE HAVE TO GO THERE!

I HAVE THE SAME ENGINE IN MINE, "MR. JEEP IS A '77", MOST OF MY PICS ARE HOMEMADE.

I KINDA DID A SEARCH ON THE INFORMATION ON YOUR WINDSHIELD, EVEN FOUND A YOU TUBE VIDEO. NO PRETTY YELLOW JEEP TO BE SEEN IN IT. CAN'T BLAME YOU, I WOULDN'T SUBJECT MINE TO THAT EITHER, NOT WITH THE MONEY/ TIME I'VE SPENT TO GET THEM IN GREAT SHAPE.I WOULD DO THAT EXTREME STUFF, ONLY ON A "HAVE TO" BASIS.

DON'T GET ME WRONG, MY 1ST 2 CJs GOT PUT THRU THE WRINGER. OLDER NOW, AND NOW I KNOW BETTER!

WHERE DO WE STAND ON GETTING YOU GOING?

DID YOU GET IT FIGURED OUT ALREADY, AND SORTA JUST LEFT ME STANDING HERE, HOLDING THE JUMPER CABLES OR WHAT?

YOUR TURN

READY TO CONTINUE, IF YOU ARE!

THE MEDIC

A FEW DAYS AGO, MY COMPUTER GUY, TRANSFERRED, MY VHS STUFF TO DVD, THEN HE SHOWED ME HOW TO DO "SNAPSHOTS", SO I AM ABLE TO HAVE "STILLS" OF HOW MY "WILLY" CAME BACK INTO BEING. THAT IS, IF THIS "VICSNAP"-"PNG" FORMAT WILL POST ON HERE, SHOULD BE 12 PICS. LAST 4 ARE "JPG".I'M HELPING MY COMPUTER GUY RESTORE HIS '63 NOVA, SO MY CYBER PROBLEMS HAVE GOTTEN MUCH CHEAPER!

OVER THE YEARS SINCE, I GOT HIM ROAD-WORTHY, THE IMPROVEMENTS I HAVE MADE, TO GET HIM SORTA LOOKING LIKE I WANT HIM. STILL GOT A LITTLE MORE TO DO TO HIM BEFORE I'M SATISFIED.

PRESENTLY ABOUT TO OBTAIN AND INSTALL A "PERTRONICS" ELECTRONIC IGNITION, INTO MY DISTRIBUTOR, I'M GONNA INSTALL BEARINGS INTO MY CLUTCH LINKAGE (JUST LIKE I DID ON MY '77 CJ 5, BEST IMPROVEMENT I HAVE DESIGNED/IMPLEMENTED EVER, WILL SHARE THE SECRETS IF YOU WANT TO HEAR/ SEE 'EM.)

THE LAST THING THAT I DEEM NECESSARY ON WILLY, IS TO MOVE MY GAS FILL NECK, UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT, CLOSE THE HOLE THAT WAS LEFT, INSTALL MR. SHOVEL AND MR. AX ON TO THE SIDE.I THINK I WILL BE TOTALLY HAPPY WITH WILLY, AT THAT POINT

Hi again Mr Medic,
I didn't forget about you. I've been working. So let's continue.
It does have a BBD carb with the stepper motor sticking out of the back of the carb.
No Emissions check has been done on it. This is Wisconsin and some of those parts are missing anyway.
It's the same old coil.
I'll get back to you on the other checks. I Truely appreciate your help on this.

Roger,

We may be able to eliminate most of that pesky vacuum line crap, get it down to only the necessities, vacuum leak possibilities would be kept to a minimum!

Let me know what the testing results are thus far.

OK LET'S DO THIS NEXT.I GOT MORE COMING!

LET'S HAVE SOMEONE ELSE CRANK, YOU MOVE WIRES INTO THE DISTRIBUTOR AND IGNITION MODULE, PUSH IN/ PULL. ETC ETC. LOOKING FOR A BROKEN WIRE.

IF NOTHING. LETS PULL THE IGNITION MODULE OFF, BACK TO THE POPULAR AUTO PARTS STORE TO HAVE IT TESTED FOR FREE. TEST 5-8 TIMES, TO WARM IT UP. YES, EVEN NEW ONES CAN BE BAD.I KNOW THIS 1ST HAND. TORE MY JEEP APART FOR 2 DAYS, BECAUSE I "ASSUMED" THE NEW ONE WAS GOOD. TEST A NEW ONE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE!

I WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO TEST THE DISTRIBUTOR NEXT

Medic,
You've been a great help. I do appreciate it and I want to learn more.
I'd like to put a pause on this if I could. I had an unexpected death in the family.
