1985 GMC S15 clutch

I just replaced the clutch, went to test drive and it will only change gears if the truck is turned off. It wont shift when truck is running. what are some possible problems?

improper installation for one but check hydraulics to see if slave is working it may not be and either needs to be bled or you have some pieces worn out. if linkage or improperly adjusted.
