only shift in first and reverse

i have a 1985 ford thunderbird and the transmission will only shift in first and reverse. what do you think the problem is and the solution. This problem seemed to happen overnight

Sounds like the shift solenoid, the torque converter clutch solenoid or the torque converter may be bad. The input shaft may have a bad bearing.
You should take the car to a tranmission shop as opposed to a stadard repair facility as automatic trannys are difficult to work on and require a lot of special tools.
