Why does my 1985 ford mustang start loosing power and messing up and pouring black smoke out around 2k rpms and clears up after three k rpms

Black smoke indicates a rich fuel mixture. If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned to identify trouble codes. Most parts stores will do it for free. Also, check to make sure the fuel pump pressure isn't too high as a result of a bad regulator. On our homepage, under the DIY section, are directions to check.
