FUEL FILTER?
YES, IT COULD BE THE SELECTOR. LISTEN TO THIS!
MAYBE RUST IN THE SYSTEM, STOPPING UP THE PUMP/ LINES/ SELECTOR/ ETC?
I'M PRESENTLY MODIFYING THE TANK IN MY '46 WILLYS JEEP.
SEEMS THAT ETHANOL IS MAKING MY STEEL TANK BUBBLE UP RUST DROPLETS (. LACK OF A BETTER WORD) ALL INSIDE OF IT
THEY ARE FLAKING OFF AND RESEMBLE PAINT FLAKES MAYBE THE LARGEST BEING 1/4 X 1/4 OF AN INCH AND SMALLER
MY TANK HAS A FITTING ON THE BOTTOM AND DRAWS FROM IT USING A 1/4" PIPE THREAD X 1/4" DOUBLE FLARE ELBOW FITTING. THE FLAKES ARE HANGING UP IN THE ELBOW, AS IT HAS ABOUT AN 1/8" HOLE IN IT. THEY SEEM TO STACK UP, MY JEEPS STARTS DYING, SOMETIMES THEY BUST UP AND SUCK ON THRU (FUEL PUMP SUCTION). IT LIVENS BACK UP. FOR A WHILE. FINALLY IT GETS TO BE TOO MUCH
DUE TO IT SUCKING FROM THE BOTTOM---THE WATER DOES LEAVE PRETTY QUICK. WHEN IT'S IN THERE. USUALLY FORMS FROM SITTING FOR A FEW DAYS
I'VE HAD OTHER PROBLEMS IN THE PAST, SO IT NOW COMES OUT OF THE TANK. GOES INTO A GLASS BOWL (LIKE FOR A TRACTOR), THIS CATCHES THE WATER, AND BIG STUFF (LIKE THE RUST). THEN ON TO MY REPLACEABLE FILTER ELEMENT FUEL FILTER. THEN ON TO MY GLASS BOWL FUEL PUMP (I TRY TO KEEP THE CRUD FROM GETTING TO IT). THE FUEL PUMP BOWL WILL ALSO CATCH WATER, SHOULD I LET THE OTHER BOWL GET FULL (I NEVER LET IT GET THAT FAR)
MY WHOLE SYSTEM WORKS GREAT. EXCEPT FOR THE STOPPAGE IN THE ELBOW UNDER THE TANK
I JUST NOW MADE AN ACCESS PORT IN THE TOP. OVER THE OUTPUT HOLE (IN THE BOTTOM)
I HAVEN'T TOOK PICS OF IT YET---BUT IT'S AT THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE TANK. DIAGONAL FROM THE NEW FILL SPOUT THAT I RELOCATED, SO I COULD INSTALL MY SHOVEL AND AX.I'LL TAKE PICS TOMORROW
SO.I CHANGED THE ELBOW TO A MORE SWEEPING ONE (A PLUMBING ELBOW). THE HOLES ARE STILL SMALL.
I TOOK 2 EARTH MAGNETS AND DRILLED HOLES IN THEM. THE PLAN IS TO ATTACH A WIRE AND LAY THEM ON EITHER SIDE OF THE OUTPUT HOLE. AN INCH OR SO AWAY
I'M GONNA DO THIS THRU THE NEW "HATCH" I JUST MADE. THERE'S A BAFFLE BETWEEN MY FILL SPOUT AND ALSO THE SENDING UNIT HOLE, THAT PREVENTS ACCESS TO THE BACKSIDE OF THE TANK. THIS IS THE REASON I JUST INSTALLED A "CLEAN OUT" BACK THERE OVER THE OUTPUT HOLE
FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, WHEN "WILLY" DIES, I HAVE TO REMOVE THE FUEL LINE FROM THE 1ST GLASS BOWL AND BLOW BACK INTO THE TANK
THIS MAY WORK FOR 2 DAYS. OR I MIGHT HAVE TO DO IT EVERY 5 MINUTES!
I'M SICK OF IT!
HOPEFULLY MY NEW PLAN WILL WORK.I'LL OPEN THE PORT. CLEAN THE MAGNETS. THEN PUT 'EM BACK.
NO MORE ETHANOL IN "WILLY". HOPEFULLY, THE RUST WILL FINALLY STOP HAPPENING, WITHOUT USING THE ETHANOL
MY OTHER JEEP HAS AN AFTER-MARKET 21 GALLON POLYETHYLENE TANK, THE STEEL FUEL LINES ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT COULD RUST IN IT
.
.
SO. MAYBE REPLACE YOUR FILTER. STICK THE OLD ONE IN A VISE. SAW THE END OFF WITH A HACKSAW. PULL OUT THE ELEMENT. SEE IF YOU HAVE THEM DARN RUST FLAKES. WHICH MIGHT BE MESSING YOU UP. PRIOR TO THE FILTER
I'LL GET SOME PICS TOMORROW. THESE ARE PRIOR TO MY LATEST MODIFICATION, I INSTALLED A FIBERGLASS BODY WHEN I RESTORED HIM IN '91. JUST GOT AROUND TO DOING THIS. WHY DON'T I GET A NEW TANK? THIS ONE WAS NEW IN '91.I'D HAVE TO MODIFY IT TOO. THIS IS A '46 TRYING TO LOOK LIKE A '43!
