my car says its in park but its actually in reverse.it it just the shifting linkage?

i recently put a rebuilt chevy 350 small block in and ill put it in reverse and then put back in park but it wont engage into park.itll still be in reverse.i think its just the shifter linkage but not 100% positive. any ideas?

Yup, sounds like the linkage is misadjusted. The indicator is adjustable but it wouldn't have been affected by replacing the engine. The transmission could be shifted which changes the geometry of the shift linkage. That's why they're adjustable too.
