1985 Cadillac El Dorado torque converter issues

when i put the car into drive or reverse it does move or go into the gear it will stay in one place and make a metal on metal grinding noise and doesnt work so what i need to know is how to fix the problem

check trans fluid first, then have an assistant put in gear an dsee if axle shaft spins if it does then you may need a new axle or do not pass go an dhave a trans guy look at it as it may be internal damage.
