944 idling problem

My '84 944 idles up and down almost to the point of cutting off after it warms up. Also, the temp gauge needle vibrates back and forth like a teletype. Are these two related? Thanks

The idle problem might just be the throttle position swich is not adjusted correctly, it should be able to hear it go "click" when opening and closing the throttle plate. The gauge issue might be related to a wiring concern, look at and inspect for loose connections at the sender or perhaps the sender itself, wiggle test them and watch what happens at the dash.
