When we first bought the car, we tried the lights and the left one immediately died out. We then turned them off and back on, the left one flicked and the right one slowly went out(like the bulb went out). The only thing that was working was the right side bright. We messed with wiring and now neither one works. Please help.

It sounds like a connection problem, Follow this article though it is for running lights, the concept is the same for headlights,

Let me know what you find.

They are sealed beams. I fell like its going to be quite a challenge. And where would we find the ground cables/wiring?

The ground is one of the wires in the headlight connector, use a test light

And I included a wiring diagram for you 1984 Nissan 300zx
