It appears that gearbox will not shift into drive & then will only go no faster than 40kls per hr and overheats would this be caused by a sensor on side of gearbox as when you pull over wait five minutes the problem seems to go away it only happens occasionally

I would be thinking more of a mechanical internal problem and probably with the torque converter, this will need the line pressures checked and a good look over by a qualified trans tech.
