I was driving slowly in town with Merc w123 200 petrol when timing chain snapped. The chain is still visible through the oil cap hole and no smells or heat came from inside - will the engine be damaged?

Yes, a snapped timing chain can cause a lot of mechanical damages and you can only find out after disassembly.
