A week after replacing the head gasket on this car the lifters (i think all of them) are very loud. The car almost sounds like a desel. There is be no re occurence of water in the oil nor is the car leaking or losing oil. Could this be the oil pump gone bad and under normal conditions how far could you drive this car befor engine failure. Is there a way to test to see if the oil pump is working? The pressure gauge is not functioning.

Check oil pump pressure. Go to a parts store and rent a mechanical oil gauge. Remove the oil sending unit from your vehicle and screw in the mechanical gauge. Start the engine to see what the pressure actually is.

Ok what should the pressure read? I was out of town when this problem occured if it is the oil pump would it be possible to drive the car 50-60 miles without engine failure? Because I have not realizing how bad the lifters were knocking.

If there is no or very low pressure, it will cause internal engine damage. Usually, the norm is around 10psi for every 1000 RPM's
