how do you replace a thermostat in a 1984 gms jimmy

Disconnect the neg battery terminal. Drain coolant from radiator. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. It will end at the thermostat housing. Remove the hose, unbolt the 2 bolts holding the housing in place. Remove the housing. Pay attention to the direction the thermostat is positioned so you can replace the new one the same way. Clean all old gasket material from the housing and engine and reverse the sequence to replace it.
