84 mustang 5.0 w/5 speed charges fine till I put it in gear and let out clutch. What is wrong

You're just reducing the RPMs to the point that the alternator isn't turning fast enough to keep up. That's normal.

Yes but as the rpms pick up it still does not charge

That sounds like a problem with the alternator then.

Has external voltage regulator check plug and wiring
