1983 Volkswagen Rabbit Car starts but doesn't run

Hello I have a 83 vw rabbit gti but the car won't run. It starts but then dies if I'm not stepping on the gas. The gasoline comes back up from the place where you pour in the gasoline. It starts up no problem but it won't run for 5 min straight. It shakes a bit and I don't know why. Any help is appreciated.

Fuel injected or carbureted?

Most likely fuel injected... you need to check the "warm-up regulator" (control pressure regulator) to see if it is providing correct fuel pressure when the engine is cold.

Does the engine run better once it is warm?
