the transmision has trouble shifting out of second. the car has been sitting for a long time.What can be done to see if the problem can be fixed without tearing into the transmision?

Check/test the line pressures. That would help to diagnose if the trans has a pressure problem which would require at least the valve body to be checked.

Have the transmission fluids checked and replaced if necessary.
