FOUND THAT ENGINE IN YOUR YEAR (I DON'T KNOW WHY IT KEPT POPPING UP "300" AS THE ONLY 6 CYL CHOICE
THE GAS CAP ISSUE SORTA MAKES NO SENSE FOR A CARBURETOR VEHICLE, TOO MUCH AIR IS NOT AN ISSUE, RUNNING NO CAP AT ALL WILL HAVE NO AFFECT, ON NEWER VEHICLES THAN '82, IT IS MORE OF A POLLUTION CONCERN.
VEHICLE MUST BE TIMED AT A SPECIFIC IDLE SPEED, IF THE IDLE IS TOO FAST, THE CENTRIFUGAL ADVANCE (WEIGHTS) INSIDE THE DISTRIBUTOR WILL "ADVANCE" THE TIMING. THEN IF "YOU" SET IT TO TEN, IT MAY BE A GOOD BIT OFF.
IT'S ALSO A MUST TO REMOVE AND TEMPORARILY CAP THE VACUUM ADVANCE HOSE (VACUUM HOSE) DURING THE TIMING PROCEDURE, AS WELL AS ADJUST AND MAINTAIN THE CORRECT IDLE SPEED THROUGHOUT THE PROCEDURE.
WHEN TIMING IS DONE, REPLACE THE VACUUM ADVANCE HOSE, INSURE YOUR IDLE SPEED IS AT CURB IDLE. THIS CURB IDLE INFO SHOULD BE UNDER YOUR HOOD, AND IS PROBABLY BETWEEN 700-800 RPM (MY REFERENCE SAYS TO SEE UNDER HOOD LABEL)
BACK TO "HISTORY"
JUST DUG IT OUT OF THE BARN?
BEEN DRIVING IT DAILY SINCE IT LEFT THE FACTORY?
ETHANOL TENDS TO EAT ON CARBURETOR RUBBER PARTS
I'M GONNA LINK YOU TO A POST I ANSWERED A GOOD WHILE BACK, PRETTY MUCH IT'S A "HOW TO TUNE UP" MY JEEP. THIS SORTA EXPLAINS STUFF "AFTER" YOU HAVE REPLACED THE NORMAL"SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE" PARTS (AS IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE!)

YOU REALLY NEED THE CORRECT METERS TO DO THIS RIGHT, "GUESSING" USUALLY DON'T CUT IT! THIS STUFF AIN'T GOTTA BE TOP OF THE LINE, MANY TIMES YOU CAN FIND THESE "DINOSAURS" IN A PAWN SHOP VERY CHEAP. SOMETIMES THE CLERK HAS NO CLUE AS TO WHAT THEY ARE!
RETURN WITH GOOD NEWS!
