how do i loosen the timing chain adjuster?

You push it back in. Depending on type used. If adjuster shaft has teethes on it, you need to push the locking tab to release the lock before the shaft can be pushed back in.

There is a locking tab for holding the adjuster when it is fully compressed. For some models you need a pin to hold the adjuster
