I HAVE A '77 WITH A MODEL 20 TRANSFER CASE, YOUR IS A DANA 300?
REALLY DOES NOT MATTER RIGHT NOW
BELOW IS A PIC OF MY TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASE, THE TRANSFER CASE IS CONTROLLED BY 1 LEVER, AS YOU MOVE THE LEVER, YOU ARE ACTUALLY MOVING 2 SHIFT RODS. THEY ONLY ONE ROD AT A TIME. WHEN ONE MOVES, THE OTHER IS KINDA LOCKED INTO A POSITION BY A STEEL BALL. THE EASIEST WAY TO EXPLAIN IT IS, THE RODS "LEAP-FROG" THEIR WAY THRU THE MOTIONS, AS THEY ALTERNATE, AS TO WHICH ONE IS GONNA MOVE.
EACH ROD SHIFTS THE MODES OF THE TRANSMISSION
I ALSO HAVE A '46, BACK THEN, 2 LEVERS WERE USED, I ON EACH SHIFT ROD. THEY ALSO WILL ONLY SHIFT IN A "LEAP FROGGING MANNER". ONE LEVER IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE, UNLESS THE OTHER IS IN A CERTAIN POSITION
UNLESS YOU CAN LOOK AT THE DATA PLATE ON THE DASH, OR JUST HAVE THE PATTERN MEMORIZED, SHIFTING FROM "IN" TO "OUT" (OF 4WD, LEFT LEVER) OR GOING FROM "2HI" TO "NEUTRAL" TO "4HI" OR "4LO" CAN BE CONFUSING (RIGHT LEVER). ONLY ONE "STICK" IS CAPABLE OF MOVEMENT, UNTIL THE OTHER IS "RIGHT"
THE VERY 1ST THING YOU NEED TO CHECK ID THE LINKAGE BETWEEN THE SHIFT LEVER AND THE CASE.
MAKE SURE, A COTTER PIN HAS NOT COME OUT, LETTING A PIN FALL OUT. ONLY ALLOWING ONE ROD TO MOVE
YOU CAN GAIN ACCESS TO THE TRANSFER CASE, EITHER THRU THE FLOOR PANEL, OR BY CRAWLING UNDER
THE RODS MAY NEED LUBRICATION
MAKE SURE FOREIGN MATERIAL SUCH AS A ROCK OR STICK IS NOT JAMMED INTO THE LINKAGE
WORST CASE ON THE EXTERIOR IS BADLY WORN OR BROKEN LINKAGE
WORST CASE OVERALL IS "INTERNAL PROBLEMS"
RESULTS THIS FAR?
THE MEDIC
1ST PIC IS MY '46.2ND IS '46. THE REST ARE MY '77. NOTICE HOW THE 2 RODS SORTA "TEE" TOGETHER TO BE OPERATED BY THE SINGLE LEVER. MY RODS CAN BE LUBRICATED, BY REMOVING THE PLASTIC CAPS OVER EACH ONE
