It was cold outside, and had driven maybe 3 blocks. I had the defroster on and was approaching a red light. As I slowed down, my car started to act like it was going to die, so I tried to quickly turn off the defrost, but it died anyway. It has done this multiple times in past during cold weather. But it would not restart. The previous month I kept smelling gas coming from under hood area, but could not find any fuel leak, and the exhaust smelled like it was running a little on the rich side. Pulled the air cleaner assembly off and my carb was flooded.two hours go by... Called a shade tree mechanic I know(big mistake) and they had me try and start it. My carb was dumping a ton of gas to the point it was overflowing the primary chamber and going into the secondary one. So this guy turns my float adjusting screws all the was shut and the gas would still pour in. Am I in need of a carb replacement? Or is there some other parts I should check before going this route? I need to get my car going asap, as it's my main source of transportation to my job I've had only a couple of months. PLease help!!!

My car is the Accord LX 3 door hatchback 1.8L with a 3bbl Keihin carb on it. It has the 49 state emissions engine.

If you are dumping that much fuel, the needle and seat in the carb can't be stopping the fuel from entering the carb. Take it apart and check to make sure it shuts off the fuel supply, and make sure the floats are "floating". If they sink due to a hole, the fuel will not shut off. Also, make sure there is no fuel in the motor oil. If there is, change it.

Okay that all sounds great...any suggestions on where to get an exploded view of my carb? I can't even find a tag on the carb identifying model other than two colums of lletters and #"s stamped into the body of carb itself! And since I'm going to take it apart, should I just get a rebuild kit? Recommended brands of kits ect?

I don't have an exploded view of the carb. However, when you get a rebuild kit, it will have the directions you need.

Okay, bought a rebuilt carb that was already adjusted...basically bolt on and go. Car was running great. Drove it to work and home again. Still running great...other than the RPM's were a little high. My tank was pretty much on "E" so I went and put gas in at the usual place. It ran great after that for about 1/2 a block. Now my car won't even stay running unless you constantly pump the pedal. Doesn't matter if it's in gear or not. My fuel pump is working. Is it possible there was water in the gas I bought? Or any suggestions on what it could be? I am literally about ready to drive - or push this car off a cliff!

It could be water, dirt causing the needle valve to stick open and flood the engine, too much fuel pressure... If the tank was really low on fuel, sometimes dirt gets picked up.

It's no longer flooding the engine. I fixed that problem with the new carb. I have to give it a lot of gas now just to keep it running. Pumped some of the gas from tank into a jar to make sure the wasn't any water in the tank, and the gas was good. My fuel filter appears to still be nice and clean. Maybe a vac line came undone? All the vac lines and fuel lines were replaced when the new carb was installed. I'm open to all possibilities. Anyone with a list of things to check and in what order would be helpful.I just really can't afford to take it to a mechanic so hopefully I can fix this problem with the help of friends and someone on here...Thanks.
