What causes a 305 engine in a 1981 chevy el camino to backfire? I started the car up to charge the battery cuz it hasn't been started in a long while when I turned the engine off the motor backfired it's never done that before and I would like to know why it is doing that?

SOMETIMES HIGH IDLE SPEED.......OR MAYBE RICH FROM THE CHOKE BEING ENGAGED (IF YOU DIDN'T WARM IT ALL THE WAY UP)......EVEN ACCIDENTALLY TURNING THE KEY BACK ON, ARE SOME THINGS THAT MIGHT CAUSE THE BACKFIRE

cold be a cracked dist cap bad wire or sparkplug plus what cj said.
