1980 Volkswagen Rabbit front disc brakes

front disc brakes dont work. pressure wont build up so is it the master cylinder? or maybe they arent bleeding it correctly. does it matter to use disc or drum fluid? its actually a car im wanting to buy its only 500 dollars

I belive in 1980 they used Dot 3 brake fluid. Check the master cylinder cap. WHen you bleed the brakes, you need to start from that furthest away from the MC and move to the closest. Is that what you are doing? Do you know how to bleed them so additional air doesn't get into the system? Have you checked to make sure the calipers are not frozen?
