I have a 1979 firebird. I need to adjust the idle speed and run it a bit. It is a 301 with a 2 bbl carb. I would like help on why the setting should be and which each adjustment on the carb is and does.

You need a tachometer

Close the A/F mixture screws and back both of them out 2 turns and then close the idle speed screw and then turn idle screw 2 1/2- turns-now start car up-make sure its idling at 600rpm-if okay start closing the mixture screws one at time till the engine starts missing then back it out 1/4 turn do the same for the other-when this done start adjusting the idle spped screw till you get 600rpm- or higher as you wish
