This sounds like the carburetor choke is not working right when the engine is cold can you remove the air cleaner to make sure the choke is shut?

I would check the choke but it sounds more like the timing chain might have let go can you test the compression to confirm?

Here is a guide.

Please run down this guide and report back

Also check the ballast resistor, they used to be about $2 adn were alot of start up problems. It's a white block with 4 wires connected to it. Normally truck will want to start on start cycle then quit when you let off of ignition.

Or you can also tap on the starter with a hammer while someone else try to start it, to see if the bendix will engauge. If it doesn't, and all it does is click, then check for loose connections on the starter soleniod or any corrosion. If thats ok then still look at replacing the starter. Hope this helps

Engine Performance problem
1978 Other Dodge Models V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 65000 miles

I have a 1978 Dodge 440 4bbl (carter)carb, Pace Arrow Motorhome, it got overheated very quickly due to a bad lower hose. With that fixed it has gas, oil, water, battery, and it cranks good but will not start. The coil was very hot an hour after the motor cooled totally down. It was running great until over heat and shut down. Any ideas will help. I'm changing the coil now as rest was just done.
Thank you
Carolyn

Are you sure it is getting enough gas? You might have to pump the pedal some to get it started. Does that help?

My 1975 dodge dart won't start. It will accept a boost, changed the battery no difference, cleaned battery connections no difference, I think it's the starter but if it is then why does it start with a boost

Hi:
I recommend that you eliminate certain things. First, it may be the starter. What I suggest is to start by disconnecting the battery and then removing the starter. Take the starter to a parts store to have it checked. My guess is that it's drawing too much current.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Engine Mechanical problem
1973 Other Dodge Models V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hello,
We have a rebuilt older (1973) 440 V8 that we just reinstalled. The timing mark with the timing light is way off the timing mark indicator, roughly 100degrees. It will not fire if the timing mark is adjusted to the 5-7degrees BTDC like we believe it is supposed to be. Any suggestions on why the mark is not in the indicator range while running?

Try putting the engine no.1 piston on compression stroke and line the crank pulley to 0/TDC markings -open up the dizzy cap is the rotor point directly to the no.1 cap tower-if not its out of time-recheck the valve timing
