1979 Chevrolet Truck chugging and backfiring

Engine is chugging with loss of power and when accelerating hard it backfires slightly

Sounds like it's misfiring. Start out checking the plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor. Change them if they have not been changed recently.

If the tune up doesn't fix it I have seen the head gasket blown between two cylinders cause this problem, also I would remove the valve covers and crank the engine over without starting it to see if the rockers are all working correctly, because a flat camshaft can cause this as well.
