I tried boosting my son's 1979 Chevy Nova, had the cables on correctly, but a wire burned up that was running from the negative post. Why would this happen, and how difficult is it to fix?

Do you mean the grounding strap?

When high capacity discharge is required from the battery, especially from the starter, battery cables have meet certain capacities. In your case if the cable uis worn or weak, the jump start could have ovetheated the cable and burn it off.

Replacing it with a higher capacity cable is all you need to do.
