As it drives, the car starts to jerk a little because it's not getting enough gas, then it gets enough gas, then it starves again & conks out. Someone said it can be adjusted with a screwdriver

Not likely, due to the alcohol in todays fuel it's time for a rebuild if it has the old style float which is plastic it probably needs that as the center has been eaten out by the fuel.
