1979 Chevrolet El Camino Would Cause Tachometer Run Backward After General

What would cause a tachometer to run backward? After some general ignition work I hooked up a manual tachometer to my 1979 El Camino only to discover it ran backward - rpm "dropped" when the engine accelerated. I tried swapping the wires that feed into the coil (HEI distributor) but no change. What the...?

Usually it is wired off the negative/tach side of coil. Any instructions with tach?
