how is a positive battery cable checked or replaced?

Take the negative battery cable loose. Take the positive battery cable loose on both ends, replace. To do a voltage drop test, you need to crank it while testing for voltage on both ends. If you get the same reading at both ends, nothing wrong with cable.

Just to add, you may have more than one circuit going to positive battery post? I'm talking about the one that goes to starter solenoid.
