why would the waterpump turn in a 1978 ford granada but not the crankshaft?

I do not know your situation......BUT!!!

Are you turning the fan?.......It turns free nothing else will?

You are turning the "FAN CLUTCH"!!! It freewheels on the end of the water-pump shaft.....It adjusts itself for efficiently cooling the radiator with minimum RPMs as not to rob Horsepower from the engine!

Is that your issue?
