What is wrong with my 1978 caprice?

The generator light on my 1978 caprice 350 is always on. It started to come on dim and slowly and now is on all the time. Alternator tested ok, new battery, new battery cables, plugs are ok, distributor seems ok, new fuel filter, fresh tank of gas. Car starts up and idles fine in park no misses. When I shift into R or D the dashlights dim and engine starts to miss. It almost stalls at stop lights and is sluggish off the line. What is your guess about what the problem is.

i'd try another alternator. could be overcharging or some other internal problem tripping light.
