Begun dieing at random

So have a '77 Wagoneer with the 360. It has begun dieing at random. It only happens on longer drives say over 15 miles. Just driving across town to work it will run fine. I can make it just outside town and it will die. I pull over, wait 30 seconds to a min. And it will start right up and run fine for another 10 mins or so. Then dies again. It's starving for fuel because if I crank it without pumping the gas it won't start.

One pump and it starts right back up. I replaced the fuel pump with an electronic, put in a new fuel filter and it has had a recent tune-up-eg. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil, filter. I'm at my wits end with this thing! Any ideas?

Have you checked fuel flow when it quits? A 77 with ONLY 165k? That's remarkable! I think it's electrical myself, weak or no spark. Some component is heating and failing. Module/coil/distributor hall effect.

Try dumping gas in carb when it quits and see if it fires immediately. Then you know it's a fuel problem.

I KNOW THIS IS MY '77 258 CJ 5

THIS IS THE FUEL FILTER YOU SHOULD HAVE

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_In-Line-Fuel-Filter-Fram_22660951-P_4_R%7CGRPFILTAMS_____

'CAUSE I JUST LOOKED IT UP

YOU NEED TO LOSE THE ELECTRIC PUMP AND GO BACK W/ THE MECHANICAL

YOUR RIG'S FUEL SYSTEM SHOULD BE REALLY CLOSE TO MINE (I NOW HAVE A HOLLEY 390 CFM INSTALLED ON MY SIX).... IRRELEVANT!

YOUR FILTER ACTS LIKE A "TEE" PROVIDING LIQUID GOLD TO THE CARB, AND THE EXTRA LIQUID GOLD RETURNS TO THE FUEL TANK....THIS KEEPS FROM OVER-PRESSURING THE NEEDLE AND SEAT IN THE CARB

OTHER THAN THE SUGGESTION BY CAR RADIO DOC, UP TOP

ADDITIONAL POSSIBILITIES ARE YOUR TANKS "VENT" HAS BEEN CAPPED OFF OR MODIFIED

AND POSSIBLY YOUR BOWL VENT(S) ON THE CARB ARE CAPPED OF

THE TANK VENT, DOES/ OR USE TO GO INTO THE CHARCOAL CANISTER IT IS A BRIGHT GREEN TUBE THAT RESEMBLES A SMALL LITTLE BITTY GARDEN HOSE, 'CEPT IT IS A HARDER PLASTIC

IN MY PICS BELOW YOU WILL SEE THE WAY IT SHOULD BE HOOKED UP----THE TEENY LITTLE FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE AND THE DIAL TYPE REGULATOR ARE NOT NECESSARY ON YOUR....JUST BELLS AND WHISTLES ON MINE!

I NO LONGER HAVE A CANISTER, MY TANK VENT, RUNS THRU A LIQUID CHECK VALVE AND A ROLL-OVER CHECK VALVE THEN COMES TO THE FRONT.....I NOW HAVE IT MOUNTED ON THE FIREWALL, VIA EXTENDING THE GREEN HOSE WITH SOME FUEL LINE. THE FUEL FILTER ON TOP, KEEPS OUT THE DIRT DAUBERS AND ALLOWS IT TO BREATHE

HAS YOURS BEEN ALL MONKEYED WITH OVER ITS 35 YEAR OLD LIFE?

ANOTHER POSSIBILITY? ........FUNKY ACTING MODULE?

THIS IS WHAT YOUR MODULE LOOKS LIKE

PRESTOLITE

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Duralast-Ignition-Control-Module/1977-Jeep-Wagoneer/_/N-in9l5Z9n80t?itemIdentifier=111559_0_6007_

MOTORCRAFT

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Ignition-Control-Module-BWD_5240484-P_194_R%7CGRPTUNEAMS_____

PRESTOLITE IGN IS SO CRAPPY, I REPLACED THE IGN AND DISTRIBUTOR IN MY JEEP, WITH THE NEWER TYPE MOTORCRAFT SYSTEM.......DUE TO SO MANY RECURRING PROBLEMS WITH THE ORIGINAL STUFF

TO REMOVE YOUR "MOTORCRAFT" IGNITION MODULE ....ON EITHER SIDE OF THE CONNECTORS GRASP THE WIRES AND PULL HARD (DIGGING W/ A SCREWDRIVER IS SORTA FRUITLESS) IF YOU PULL EVENLY ON THE BUNDLE OF WIRES, IT WILL COME APART AND YOU WON'T BREAK THE LOCKING TABS

OFF TO A POPULAR AUTO PARTS STORE, YOU GO....THEY USUALLY WILL TEST THESE FOR FREE

LETS WATCH AND SEE IF THEY HOOK UP RIGHT (IF YOU KINDA CAN READ THE CHART THEY ARE READING)

THEN HAVE THEM TEST IT 5-8 TIMES (THIS WILL WARM IT UP) SHOULD IT FAIL THE LAST FEW TESTS.....ANY THING LESS IS LAZINESS....AND YOU MIGHT SUFFER...NOT THEM!

WHAT IF IT FAILS?.............YES, REPLACE IT!

AS YOU PUT YOU HAND ON THEIR DOOR HANDLE TO LEAVE, WITH YOUR NEW ONE............

TURN YOUR BUTT RIGHT AROUND, GO BACK TO THE COUNTER, AND HAVE THEM TEST "THEIR" NEW ONE 5-8 TIMES.

WHY????

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE TEARING YOUR ENTIRE JEEP CJ 5 DOWN (EVEN THE WIRING) FOR 2 DAYS, TEARING YOUR HAIR OUT!.........BECAUSE, IT WILL NOT START!!! .......THEN YOU TAKE THE BRAND NEW, UNTESTED MODULE, BACK TO THE STORE, ONLY TO FIND OUT.....IT TOO, WAS BAD!

BELOW IS A PIC OF THE TESTER AT ADVANCE AUTO......THE CORRECT PIG-TAIL(S) TO TEST YOURS IS RIGHT BESIDE THE MACHINE (I PUT THEM THERE!)

CLOSEST TO THE MACHINE IS FOR MOTORCRAFT----FURTHEREST IS FOR PRESTOLITE

REMEMBER---MECHANICAL PUMP!

KEEP US UPDATED!

....WE DO LIKE PICS!

YOUR TURN

Not yet, I have looked over your info & photos (very informative thanks!) But had to make an emergency trip out of state and haven't gotten back to working on the jeep. Doing it this weekend.
