My power steering went out, I replaced a broken steering coupler (rag joint), I still need to replace the power steering pump, (i believe is the reason im not getting power steering) after replacing the coupler the truck will not shift into reverse or park, neutral is what gear it shifts into when in the top position. What could cause this?

I'D SAY WORST CASE IS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

DO YOU HAVE A REPAIR MANUAL, TO LOOK AT DIAGRAMS FOR A REFERENCE?

IF I WERE STUMPED, AND I THOUGHT THE TRANNY WAS FINE

I'D CHOCK THE WHEELS, AND HAVE MY BUDDY SLOWLY RUN IT THRU THE GEAR POSITIONS

I'D GET TO ANY PLACE I COULD TO SEE THE FULL EXTENT OF THE CABLE

I'D MOVE ON DOWN TO THE TRANSMISSION AND WATCH THE CABLE MOVE THE LINKAGE ON THE TRANSMISSION

HERE ARE THINGS TO WATCH FOR

THE OUTER SHROUD IS NO LONGER ANCHORED (OR SLIPPED IN THE ANCHOR) AND THE "SHIFTING" MOVEMENT JUST LETS THE OUTER SHROUD MOVE, THE INNER CABLE DOES NOT. IT SLIPPED IN THE ANCHOR, NOW ANCHORED IN THE WRONG SPOT, THE LINKAGE DOES NOT MOVE ENOUGH NOW

THE INNER CABLE IS BROKE TRANNY LINKAGE DOES NOT MOVE

THE ANCHOR FOR THE OUTER SHROUD, AT THE SHIFTER HANDLE END MIGHT HAVE MOVED OR SLIPPED

HECK, THE TRANNY LINKAGE MIGHT BE LOOSE AND FLOPPY, OR EVEN HAVE FALLEN OFF AND IS DANGLING BY THE CABLE

MY '46 WILLYS JEEP DID THIS:

I USED A BOAT STEERING CABLE TO REPLACE MY EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE

WHEN MY NEW MUFFLER WAS INSTALLED, I DID NOT REALIZE THAT THE NEW EXHAUST PIPE WAS SO CLOSE TO THE "BOAT CABLE" (E-BRAKE)

I SELDOM USED THE E-BRAKE, AND A GOOD WHILE LATER, I REALIZED IT DID NOT WORK

I THOUGHT IT WAS THE DRIVESHAFT BRAKE SHOES WERE OUT OF ADJUSTMENT (THE JEEP'S E-BRAKE WORKS JUST LIKE DRUM BRAKES ON A WHEEL, 'CEPT THE DRUM IS ON THE BACK OF THE TRANSFER CASE AND SPINS W/ THE DRIVESHAFT

AFTER 3 OR 4 TIMES OF REALLY NEEDING THE E-BRAKE, WHILE PARKING ON A HILL. AND HAD TO RELOCATE TO FLAT GROUND, I DECIDED TO REPAIR IT

AFTER INSPECTING THE E-BRAKE SHOES, AND THEY WERE OK, I HAD MY BUDDY ACTUATE THE E-BRAKE LEVER

I HAD NO MOVEMENT ON THE ACTUATING ARM AT THE E-BRAKE DRUM

I FOLLOWED THE CABLE BACK AND FOUND THE EXHAUST PIPE HAD SOFTENED AND MELTED THE BOTTOM SIDE OF MY "BOAT CABLE"

THE OUTER SHROUD (STILL ATTACHED) SORTA HAD BOWED UPWARD, AND THE INNER CABLE REMAINED IN A STRAIGHT LINE (EXPOSED)

AS MY BUDDY ACTUATED THE BRAKE HANDLE----THE MESSED UP SECTION RESEMBLED AN "INCH WORM" MOVING UP AND DOWN. AND THE INNER CABLE, NOW EXPOSED FOR ABOUT 2 INCHES, NEVER MOVED

THE MELTED SHROUD WAS "LOST MOTION"

I IMAGINE THE SAME THING MIGHT COULD HAPPEN IF THE OUTER SHROUD GOT "WORN THIN" IN A CERTAIN SPOT

I ANSWERED ONE OF YOUR PREVIOUS POSTS ABOUT THE RAG JOINT

NOT TRYING TO BE A PAIN. IF YOU WOULD, AT A BRAND NEW POST, INCLUDE ALL THE INFO YOU CAN.I SEARCHED YOUR USERNAME AND LOOKED AT YOUR PREVIOUS POSTS SO I COULD FIND OUT IF YOU HAD AN AUTOMATIC TRANNY OR A MANUAL ONE, I DID NOT WANNA WASTE TIME, BY ASKING YOU AT THIS POST, AND THEN WAIT FOR A REPLY

DO KEEP US POSTED ON YOUR FINDINGS

POST PICS OF WHAT YOU FIND WRONG OR MAYBE DON'T UNDERSTAND
