My 1975 Land Cryuiser will start but when the key is releaased to go back to run, the engine stops. If I hold the key in the start position it will continue to run but will immediately stop when key is released. How do I determine if the igniter assembly or the ballast resistor is defective? Could it be another problem?

The ignition switch is faulty and replacing it should solve the problem.

I replaced the ignition and it did not help. I get voltage to the distributor on the red lead to the points when switch is on run position. It has to be something simple- a wire or ground loose but I have not been successful in locating it.

Try starting and when ignition switch is released, check the Red wire for battery voltage. If voltage is not available, wigggle the ignition key and recheck.

Is the replacement ignition switch new and OEM?

I do have voltage at red wire terminal after trying to start. Voltage is drained off whenm points are closed. It is a new OEM switch. It will still crank and run as long as I hold key in start position but I can't hold it there for more than a second in order to protect my starter.

You mentioned points, is this with contact breaker points or transistorised ignition?

Releasing the key to the rn position and engine stalled indicates there is a power supply interruption. If your vehicle has the external ignition coild with ballast resistor, enure you have voltage on teo wires at the cran position. disconnect the starter solenoid wire to perform the test to avaoid cranking the engine.
