A 454 is from an era when 10W-40 was typically used. Newer, smaller engines use thinner oils such as 10W-30, 10W-20, even 0W-20. The thinner oils pump easier so the engine doesn't have to work so hard to run the oil pump, and that is supposed to get better fuel mileage. The thinner oils run through the engine bearings faster so it's more critical to prevent the level from getting low. If you turn a corner and the oil runs to one side of the oil pan, if the level is low the pump will suck up air for a few seconds. Older engines with thick oil that hangs in the bearings longer can tolerate that. Many newer engines will be damaged in a few seconds.
