I am replacing the alternator. I cannot remove or hardly turn the pivot bolt on the bottom. The nut is off but I cant get the alternator to move off the bolt or make the bolt turn. Suggestions? Should this just pull off? Does the pivot bolt need to be unscrewed?

BOSS

THIS SHOULD BE A SIMPLE ITEM TO REMOVE

HOWEVER, MAYBE THIS HAS BEEN MODIFIED, OR THE ALTERNATOR MIGHT BE MADE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN THE ORIGINAL

I FULLY UNDERSTAND WANTING TO BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR BABY, I AM WITH BOTH OF MINE!

CAN YOU SEND ME A COUPLE OF GOOD PICS (WELL LIT) OF THE SIDE OF THE ALTERNATOR (AT THE BOTTOM) WHERE THE ISSUE IS

YOU HAVE A 232 OR A 258? (I REMAIN U.S.A, TO HECK WITH THAT LITER CRAP!)

I MAY CAN AID YOU WITH 'BOUT ANY OEM CJ ISSUE, SO YOU CAN KEEP THROWIN' 'EM ON THIS SAME THREAD IF YOU HAVE ANY

A PIC OF YOUR JEEP WOULD BE COOL TOO!

BELOW ARE MINE

Thanks for reply! I'll try on pics its dark now. Its should be simply I would think as well. Its the 258 the pivot bolt on bottom just wont cooperate. Im not even sure if it needs to be unscrewed or the alt should just slid off the bolt. Its the original alt the jeep sat for many years but has been running well for about a year. Just need to no if I should keep cranking on the bolt or try to pry off the alt.

IF YOU AIN'T GOT IT YET. STUDY "MY TECHNIQUES" IN THIS POST, WILL SAVE YOU $10 IF YOU ARE IN THE EASTERN U.S. THIS HAS SAVED ME AND MY PALS THOUSANDS OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. "A124" WAS STILL WORKING LAST WEEK!

I TOOK SOME PICS OF MINE (1977 "MR. JEEP")

THE LOWER, FATTER PART OF THE ALTERNATOR IS A "STRAIGHT THRU HOLE"

THE ALUMINUM MAY HAVE CORRODED TO THE BOLT, OR THE BOLT MAY HAVE RUSTED UP AND SWELLED IN THE HOLE

YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET PENETRATING OIL IN THERE (YOU CAN TRY FROM THE NUT END) THEN ATTEMPT TO MOVE IT BOTH WAYS WITH A WRENCH UNTIL IT WILL DO 360s

RUN THE NUT ON 4-5 THREADS THEN TAP IT WITH A HAMMER, A PUNCH OR A SMALLER BOLT MIGHT PUSH IT ON OUT

I LIKE HEAT!

WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER "RIGHT THERE" (PROBABLY NOT NEEDED) BUT YOU NEVER KNOW!

TAKE MR. PROPANE TORCH AND HEAT THE SIDE OF THE ALUMINUM DIRECTLY OVER THE HIDDEN BOLT. MAYBE "WIDE OPEN" AND WAVE IT BACK AND FORTH FOR 30 TO 45 SECONDS.-.-.-. THEN TRY THE WRENCH TO TURN IT

I WOULDA MADE A SHOT/ PIC OF "WHERE" TO APPLY THE HEAT (I FEEL SURE YOU WILL KNOW) BUT SOMEBODY STUCK THEM THREE BIG-AS TRAIN HORNS IN THE ZONE I WOULD HAVE THE TORCH IN. I WAS UNABLE TO GET A GOOD SIDE SHOT, SO I CRAMMED THE OLE KODAK EZ-SHARE DOWN IN BEHIND IT

HERE'S MY PICS (I HAVE A PROPANE TURBO TORCH W/ MAPP GAS) A CHEAPO ONE SHOULD DO THIS TRICK-MY LAST PIC/ REMOVING "U-BOLT" NUTS

YOUR TURN

Hey man thanks so much for the info. The heat worked! I couldn't save the bolt but it was easy to replace. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I learned from my youth when your not sure forcing the hell out of it can make it much worse so I was hesitant to really hammer on it until I knew it was all safe. Thanks again!
