I have a 1974 CJ5 which did start but no longer does. It turns over and just when it sounds like its going to fire a big puff of smoke comes out the carb.

Is this a timing issue and if so how do I set the timing on a non-running engine?

OK Boss, you are at the right place...If you will just hang with me!Lets get some history leading to the NO STARTAGE PROBLEM....What has been tinkered with prior to asking your question. If you were to pour 3 Soft drink caps of fuel down the carb of your 232, what does it do, when you try to start him? 1 barrel or 2 barrel carb?...Points or electronic ignition?....If you remove the plug wire off of a spark plug, stick a nail etc in the boot beside the clip...hold the nail about 1/4 inch from the block and "Crank", Do you have a good popping spark?--Your Turn---The Medic
