DID YA SORTA "ZERO" THE GEAR BOX BEFORE YOU INSTALLED THE PITMAN ARM?
KINDA WHAT I MEAN, IN "GENERIC FORM", LET'S SAY FOR SIMPLICITY SAKE.
THE PITMAN ARM IS OFF AND A-DANGLING. AND THE WHEELS ARE POINTING FORWARD
. MR. STEERING IS GEAR BOTTOMED OUT ON A LEFT HAND TURN. TURNING THE WHEEL CLOCK-WISE. THE STEERING WHEEL TURNS (STUPIDLY) EXACTLY 5 REVOLUTIONS BEFORE IT BOTTOMS OUT ON A RIGHT HAND TURN
SO TO "ZERO" YOU MUST GO BACK CCW 2-1/2 TURNS
THAT GIVES US 2-1/2 TURNS IN EITHER DIRECTION BEFORE IT BOTTOMS OUT
. WELL WHILE IT IS "ZEROED IN THE CENTER" WE ARE GONNA REINSTALL THE PITMAN ARM. AT LEAST AS CLOSE TO THE CENTER AS IT TAKES TO GET IT TO INDEX BACK IN ON THE STEERING SHAFT. YOU MAY HAVE TO TWEAK THE STEERING WHEEL A LITTLE SO IT WILL SLIDE ON CORRECTLY
. HOWEVER IT THE GEARBOX ITSELF IS MOSTLY CENTERED UP
IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY MY '77 CJ 5's BRAND NEW REPLACEMENT MANUAL STEERING GEAR TRAVELED 6-1/2 TURNS ALL THE WAY ACROSS. SO I ZEROED IT AT 3-1/4 TO THE CENTER. WITH MY WHEELS POINTING STRAIGHT, I RE-INSTALLED THE PITMAN ARM (ON MY GEAR THERE ARE 4 POSITIONS THE PITMAN ARM CAN SLIDE IN)
AT THE TIME I ZEROED MINE, MY ACTUAL STEERING SHAFT (STEERING WHEEL SHAFT) WAS NOT HOOKED ON. SO AFTER THE PITMAN ARM WENT ON.I GOT MY STEERING WHEEL AS STRAIGHT AS I COULD (WHICH THERE AGAIN, I HAD TO "TWEAK IT A LITTLE". AS IT ONLY INDEXES IN ONE SPOT IN THE SHAFT, SO THE BOLT WILL GO THRU). ANY ADDITIONAL ADJUSTMENTS TO GET THE STEERING WHEEL STRAIGHT, WHEN DRIVING STRAIGHT, MUST BE DONE BY TWISTING THE TIE ROD TUBE.
HERE'S A FEW PICS FROM WHEN I PUT MINE IN. "RL" RIGHT LIMIT--"CL" CENTERLINE--"LL" LEFT LIMIT
LEMME KNOW IF THIS HELPS
