wont start, clicking sound, charged new battery, cables to starter and battery getting hot

'71 Ford F100, 73k original miles ... I thought maybe the alternator, but the cables were hot? Then I crawled under the truck and checked the starter while my son attempted to start and the starter became a magnet and sucked the wrench to it. Maybe a solenoid or voltage regulator?

remove starter and get it tested.
