drained new battery

I just purchased a 71 454 corvette at mecum in fla and it had a dead battery. I replaced it and it ran fine. one week later and it's completely dead again. Why? I'm not a expert mechanic.

test alternator voltage at battery while car is running. should be 13.5-14.x volts. even if it charges, there may be drain thru alternator while car sits. rare, but it does happen.

if that car has an external voltage regulator the drain could be from that.
