BRING IT TO TDC---WITHOUT CHECKING #1 PISTON HEIGHT WITH A DIAL INDICATOR - NOT USING THE "TIMING MARKS" TO LINE UP TDC - HOW DO YOU ACCOMPLISH THIS?
I KNOW YOU ARE PROBABLY HINTING AT A POSSIBLE "SLIPPED HARMONIC BALANCER"
I CAN'T SEE THE "EZ WAY" OF DOING THIS WITHOUT COMPARING THE "IN USE BALANCER" TO A "NEW" OR "PROVEN" ONE

A) YOU ARE TIMING WITH THE VACUUM ADVANCE LINE "OFF AND PLUGGED" DURING THE PROCEDURE? AND ARE YOU TIMING AT CURB IDLE SPEED? ANYTHING HIGHER WILL MAKE THE MECHANICAL ADVANCE START TO COMPENSATE (WE DON'T WANT THAT!)
WE ARE USING "MANIFOLD VACUUM" OR "PORTED VACUUM" ON THE DISTRIBUTORS VACUUM ADVANCE?
B) YOUR PCV FRESH AIR INTAKE IS NOT PLUGGED OFF (CANNOT BREATHE AIR THRU THE ENGINE INTO THE PCV HOSE THAT FEEDS THE CARB (WHICH NEEDS THE PCVs AIR TO BE SORTA CALIBRATED WITH THE IDLEs FUEL) I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE STICK A "2ND PCV" IN THE FRESH AIR HOLE, THINKING IT WAS AN "EZ" MAKESHIFT ELBOW, WHEN IN FACT, IT REALLY BECAME A PLUG!
C) ARE YOU USING A "PLAIN JANE TIMING LIGHT" OR ONE WITH AN ADVANCE DIAL? IF YOU ARE GUESSING ON THE GUN'S SETTING AND PROCEDURE? STOP! SIMPLY SET THAT PUPPY ON "ZERO" AND DO IT THE OLD FASHIONED WAY AS IF YOU HAD A PLAIN TIMING LIGHT
D) LOOKED FOR VACUUM LEAKS?
E) SEND US SOME GOOD WELL LIT PICS OF THE SITUATION(s) WE LIKE PICS!
